Understanding?

There are many ways I approach my work and it is constantly evolving. Much of what you have seen in this gallery is about me reconnecting with the creative process, from simply portraying the images to creating chaos from which to experience a personal journey.

My work is abstract and expressive, which means that I mostly do not use sketches or other kinds of preparatory work before starting on a painting. My paintings develop as I am painting, and I work very spontaneously and intuitively. This does not mean that things come complete from the self. The influences of life and stimulation can be prepared but in a much more organic way than a calculated one.

I believe I put myself into places that beckon me, mostly nature, experience these landscapes in all seasons, all climates, discover the ever circling patterns and record much through mediums that I find useful. I can incorporated knowledge pertaining to this place in its many forms. The research and the recorded experience will allow more insight. This I can then explore.

Often the work changes dramatically during the process of layering. If working towards a series for an exhibition it takes around four to six months to create a group of paintings and during that time the work undergoes big colour changes, mood changes and textural interpretations. It is these changes that build the painting, and it is only because of the journey that the works end where they end. I can't skip the journey.

I am planning a set of works for exhibition and this will be the first time my ambition has been realised through one sweeping collection. I hope you will come with me x
